Social networking is a very misunderstood idea within the real estate industry, sure we all understand the phenomenon behind the idea in the real world — meet new people, make a connection and form a mutually beneficial relationship. The traditional referral or word-of-mouth advertising is one of the most powerful marketing tools a successful real estate professional has in their arsenal.
So why has the industry come up short on its implementation of social networking in the digital era of real estate marketing? How many resources do we really need to connect with other real estate professionals? The real value of social networking is the referral, isn’t that the goal, to connect with our target audience, not our competition?
Again that begs the question, “Why aren’t more real estate professionals successfully using and integrating online social networking into their marketing strategy?” If the internet is truly the great equalizer and has given everyone a voice, why isn’t the real estate industry using that to their advantage, capturing the power of the masses and using word-of-mouth advertising to shout from the proverbial roof-tops?
We are not talking about joining Myspace to “friend” a large group of new people to spam. We are talking about harnessing the true power of social networking where the network does the advertising for you. Social networking today is a grossly overused term, and a completely misused tool, but one that has the power to accomplish amazing things in the hands of those who understand how to harness its power. So we are charging full steam ahead, aligning ourselves with services such as Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, so that our network will do the work for you.
So ya, we go continue being friends on Facebook, you can follow our tweets on Twitter, or favorite one of our photos on Flickr, but the real power of this network has yet to be seen.
